Surgery at Poughkeepsie Animal Wellness

Our surgical approach

Every surgical patient at Poughkeepsie Animal Wellness receives an individualized anesthetic protocol developed by our veterinarians based on their age, weight, health status, and the procedure being performed. We use modern, reversible anesthetic agents and maintain continuous monitoring throughout every procedure.

Anesthesia and monitoring

Patient safety during anesthesia is our highest priority. Our monitoring protocols exceed the minimum standards recommended by the AAHA.

We require pre-anesthetic bloodwork for all surgical patients to identify any hidden conditions that could affect anesthetic safety.

  • Pre-anesthetic bloodwork to assess organ function
  • IV catheter and fluid support during all procedures
  • Continuous ECG, pulse oximetry, and capnography
  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Body temperature management
  • Dedicated anesthesia monitoring by trained staff

Procedures we perform

Our surgical capabilities cover the full range of routine and advanced soft tissue procedures. For highly specialized orthopedic or neurological cases, we maintain referral relationships with board-certified surgeons.

  • Spay (ovariohysterectomy) and neuter (castration)
  • Mass and tumor removal (skin, subcutaneous, internal)
  • Gastrointestinal surgery (foreign body removal, intestinal resection)
  • Bladder surgery (cystotomy for stones)
  • Wound repair and reconstructive procedures
  • Aural hematoma repair
  • Entropion and eyelid correction
  • Perineal urethrostomy (cats)

Post-operative care

Recovery begins the moment surgery ends. Our team monitors every patient through the recovery period before discharge, and we provide detailed written home care instructions for every procedure.

  • Dedicated recovery monitoring post-anesthesia
  • Pain management protocols (pre-, intra-, and post-operative)
  • Written discharge instructions for every patient
  • Follow-up recheck appointments included
  • E-collar and wound care supplies provided

Frequently Asked Questions

Have more questions? Call us at (845) 473-0358

  • Your pet should be fasted (no food) for 8–12 hours before surgery. Water is generally fine until the morning of the procedure. We'll give you specific instructions when you schedule.

  • We take pain management very seriously. All surgical patients receive pre-operative pain medication, intraoperative pain management, and go home with appropriate pain control. We'll discuss what to expect and what to watch for.

  • Most patients go home the same day. We'll call you when your pet is recovered from anesthesia and ready for discharge, typically in the afternoon for morning procedures.
